is awesome. By which I mean, a truly terrible movie done on a tiny budget with laughable stop-motion animation. (They clearly spent all their money on the animation, rather than real actors, or sets, or costumes, which are on the screen the other 99% of the movie. See http://www.rifftrax.com/rifftrax/planet-dinosaurs )

My living room is a mess, and my car is unreliable, but sometime in the next 6 months we should get together and watch it!

Or I guess if we ever get everyone together we should get Stacey to do another game.

I know that some people have had less-than enthusiastic responses to the show, but Sky and I began watching it recently and we are really liking it.

It is disturbing to have a doll personality with my name, however, and every time someone says "Melly" I have to cringe a little.

I can't express how happy this series is making me. The only drawback is that there aren't that many seasons and that the seasons are relatively short (at least, compared to American television seasons).

It is especially amusing to see hints of Greg House peeking through the gregarious and well-meaning, if not particularly bright, Wooster.

Stephen Fry returned as a guest star on Bones in an episode that we just watched and both Sky and I shouted, "Jeeves!" when he came on screen. : )

I have to say, I was a little dubious about this one. Yeah, yeah, it was done by the same people that did Sean of the Dead, I thought, but this is a police movie. I like zombie movies. Not so much with the police movies.

I was wrong. Not about the police movie thing- I really don't like them. But this movie had me laughing out loud and our Sean of the Dead friends were as dead on as I could have hoped.

This movie is absolutely worth watching.

I reached my writing goal of 80,000 total words for my novel today! (This is a continuation of my NaNoWriMo novel, so I started with 50,000 words and my goal was another 30,000 this month.) I suppose it would have been even more exciting if the book was actually finished, but alas, that is not the case. I am terribly, terribly close, however.

If I didn't have that silly work thing to do, finishing this book would be so much easier.

I'm still not quite sure why, but I can clearly recall my mother telling me the story-line of Night of the Living Dead (the original) when I was about twelve years old. Why on earth would that even have come up? I wasn't yet into zombies, just fantasy stuff at that point.

Anyway, it was just as wonderful as my mother told me it would be.

Three terms from role playing game design:

Gamist - refers to elements that are about winning, problem solving, and game play itself. When all you care about is the goal, that's gamism.

Narrativist - refers to elements that serve a dramatic theme or story. When you are doing things that are interesting or meaningful, that's narrativism.

Simulationist - refers to elements that are about modeling reality within the game. When you are trying to be realistic, that's Simulationism.

Of course, a good role-playing game usually combines these approaches in some way.

I don't really have much to say, except that I love Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie together. I just finished watching Blackadder: Back and Forth, which is the special episode done in 1999, and they are just hysterical. I, of course, watched all of the special features and there were all sorts of bits with just the bunch of them goofing around together.

I think I'll bump one of the disks of A Bit of Fry and Laurie up to the top of the queue.

I was thinking of our earlier thread about the HP books and other children's literature and then I was rereading a lovely novel and I thought, "Everyone should read this book." And then I was thinking about how much I wish I knew what other books people thought everyone should read. Anyway, my suggestion for today of books that everyone should read is:

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold

I first read this book for my high school AP English class in senior year and I like it just as much now as I did then. I was a little suspicious of it at first, because the year before I had read "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings" and I didn't like the short story much, but Chronicle soon won me over. It is rather like reading about the Titanic- so many ways that the disaster should have been avoided and, yet, somehow it still comes to pass.

The only odd thing is that I still have the same copy as I did in high school and it has all my notes for my paper in the margin and lots of underlining.

I had the misfortune to stumble upon one of the Harry Potter debates recently. I'm sure you've heard them: there is the "witches are evil and so therefore is anything that even mentions the term magic" religious crazies, there is the "HP isn't real literature and therefore children should never be exposed to it," the "HP is the ultimate in storytelling," and the "...if it gets kids reading" parties.

I have no intention of getting up on my soapbox and trying my hand at this debate.

However, the very existence of this debate makes me want to go out and finish the series. I've read the first few and they are perfectly pleasant, though nothing that I can imagine getting so worked up about in any way.

I also want to see the movie and, being the book geek that I am, I want to read the book first. You should always read the book first!

Anyway, that's my $0.02.
